Bird droppings are one of the most damaging things that can land on your car's paintwork. They might look harmless, but leave them long enough and they will etch into the clear coat, leaving permanent marks that no amount of washing will fix. If you're a driver in Bromley, Orpington, Sevenoaks, Dartford or anywhere across Kent, here's what you need to know, and what you can do to protect your paint long term.

Why Are Bird Droppings So Damaging to Car Paint?

Bird droppings are highly acidic. The uric acid in them starts to attack your car's clear coat almost immediately, and the damage gets worse the longer they sit. On a hot day, the process speeds up significantly as the heat causes the paint to expand and contract around the deposit.

In most cases, the dropping itself will harden on the surface. As it dries, it also shrinks and pulls at the clear coat, which can cause what's known as etching, a dull, textured mark left in the paint even after the dropping is removed.

How to Safely Remove Bird Droppings from Car Paint

Speed matters. The sooner you remove a bird dropping, the less chance it has to cause damage. Here's the right way to do it.

What You Need

  • Clean microfibre cloths
  • A spray bottle of water or a dedicated bird dropping remover
  • pH-neutral car shampoo

Step by Step

Step 1. Never wipe a dry bird dropping off with a dry cloth. This drags the hardened particles across the paint and causes scratches.

Step 2. Soak the dropping first. Spray water or a bird dropping remover directly onto it and leave it to dwell for a minute or two until it softens.

Step 3. Gently blot and lift the dropping away with a clean microfibre cloth. Don't rub, just lift.

Step 4. Follow up with a rinse and a quick wash of the area using pH-neutral shampoo.

Step 5. Check the paint underneath. If there is already etching or a dull mark, this will need professional paint correction to remove properly.

What If the Damage Is Already Done?

If a bird dropping has been sitting on your paint and has already caused etching, washing alone won't fix it. The etching is damage to the clear coat itself, and the only way to remove it is through machine polishing and paint correction.

At ZMP Detail, we carry out paint correction for drivers across Bromley, Orpington, Sevenoaks, Dartford and Kent regularly. In many cases, the damage can be fully removed and the paint restored to a flawless finish.

How to Stop Bird Dropping Damage Coming Back

Removing the dropping is a short-term fix. If you want long-term protection, you need to think about what's sitting between the bird dropping and your paint.

Ceramic Coating

A ceramic coating creates a hard, chemically resistant layer over your paintwork. It doesn't make your car immune to bird dropping damage, but it does slow the acid attack significantly and makes removal much easier. A coated car gives you more time to act before damage sets in.

PPF (Paint Protection Film)

PPF takes things further. As a physical barrier, it takes the brunt of bird dropping damage completely. If a dropping etches through, it etches into the film, not your paint. The film can be replaced if necessary, your paint stays untouched.

For drivers in areas with a lot of trees, parking under canopies, or commuting into central London where pigeons are a genuine hazard, PPF is the most effective solution available.
